Dyslexia Week 12/19-12/26

By Tanvi Garg
December 19, 2021 marked the start of our Dyslexia Awareness Week, where we raised awareness about dyslexia and talked about things related to dyslexia to our followers on our Instagram account, @myfirstmentor. The first day, we started off with a simple “What is Dyslexia?” post, which led to the Day 2 post, “Signs of Dyslexia.”. Next, we asked the question, “Is there a cure?” on Day 3, and explained to our followers that there wasn’t a cure, but also shared some things that could be done to help people with dyslexia, which we continued on Day 4 by promoting some organizations that support people with dyslexia. On Day 5, we touched on co-occurring conditions, and how people with dyslexia could struggle with other things too, and on Friday, December 24th, we shared another fact on Dyslexia Awareness Fact Friday, the fact that “The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 15% of the population has dyslexia.” We ended off our Dyslexia Awareness Week with an interactive story and post, “Myth or Fact?”, where we asked people to determine whether common conceptions about dyslexia are a myth or fact. We felt it was important to do this because many people have negative stereotypes against people with dyslexia, and we wanted to change that by helping people understand more about dyslexia. You can also raise awareness and help destigmatize dyslexia by doing things like posting on social media, discussing with others in your community, supporting organizations that help people with dyslexia, reaching out to dyslexic people you know, and much more.
